The Instant Pot Duo is the best-selling kitchen appliance of the last decade. But “best-selling pressure cooker” and “best rice cooker” are very different claims. After three months of side-by-side testing with dedicated rice cookers, here’s an honest answer to whether the Instant Pot can replace your rice cooker.

Short answer: No, but it’s good enough for most people who already own one.

The Rice Function: What to Expect

The Instant Pot Duo’s rice function uses low pressure cooking, not the heating-element approach of a dedicated rice cooker. This creates a fundamentally different cooking environment:

  • Pressure builds before cooking begins (5–10 min preheat)
  • Rice cooks under slight pressure
  • Natural pressure release (NPR) takes an additional 10–15 min

Total time from raw to table: 25–30 minutes, similar to a dedicated cooker, but with less hands-off convenience since timing the release matters.

Water Ratio: The Biggest Learning Curve

Every Instant Pot rice guide will tell you something different, and that’s because the right ratio varies by:

  • Rice variety
  • Pot size (6qt vs 8qt)
  • Whether you rinse the rice

Our tested ratios for 6qt Duo:

  • Long-grain white: 1:1 (rice:water), NOT the traditional 1:1.5
  • Jasmine: 1:1 (rinse first)
  • Brown rice: 1:1.25
  • Basmati: 1:1 (rinse extensively)

These are counterintuitive compared to stovetop. A dedicated rice cooker eliminates this entirely, just use the included measuring cup and fill to the line.

Keep-Warm Performance

One area where dedicated rice cookers clearly outperform the Instant Pot: keep-warm. The Duo’s keep-warm function holds rice at a safe temperature, but after 2-3 hours, the bottom layer gets noticeably dry and the texture degrades. After 6 hours, the rice develops a stale, slightly off flavor.

Compare that to the Zojirushi NS-ZCC10’s extended keep-warm, which held jasmine rice in near-perfect condition for 12+ hours in our testing. If you cook rice in the morning and eat throughout the day, a dedicated cooker wins by a wide margin.

Our recommendation: If using the Instant Pot for rice, plan to eat it within 2 hours. Transfer leftovers to a container in the fridge rather than relying on the keep-warm function.

Cleaning and Maintenance

The Instant Pot inner pot is stainless steel, which is both an advantage and a drawback for rice. On the positive side, there is no non-stick coating to scratch or degrade over time. On the negative side, rice sticks more easily, especially if you skip rinsing or use slightly too little water.

Cleaning requires soaking for 10-15 minutes before scrubbing. The lid gasket also absorbs cooking odors, something you don’t deal with on most dedicated rice cookers. After cooking your rice, the Instant Pot will smell like whatever else you pressure-cooked that week.

The gasket is removable and dishwasher safe. We recommend keeping a dedicated gasket for rice if you also pressure-cook strongly flavored foods like chili, curry, or bone broth.

Noise Level

The Instant Pot is noticeably louder than a dedicated rice cooker during the pressure-release phase. If you use natural pressure release (NPR), which we recommend for rice, the release is gradual and quiet. But many users instinctively reach for the quick-release valve, which produces a loud hiss and a burst of steam that can startle pets and small children. It also disrupts the rice’s final steaming phase and makes it wetter.

Rule of thumb: Always use natural release for rice. Quick-release is for soups and stews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the rice button for all rice types? No. The rice button is calibrated for white rice only. For brown rice, use the Multigrain setting with a 1:1.25 water ratio. For sushi rice, we don’t recommend the Instant Pot at all, the texture consistency is not reliable enough.

Does the Instant Pot make better rice than a $20 basic cooker? Marginally. In our testing, the Instant Pot Duo produced slightly more consistent white rice than the cheapest on/off rice cookers (like the basic Aroma). But a $25 Aroma with proper water ratios came close enough that the difference doesn’t justify buying an Instant Pot for rice alone.

Is the Instant Pot Duo mini (3 qt) good for rice? It works, but the smaller capacity exaggerates the ratio sensitivity. Getting the water right in the 3-qt is more finicky than the 6-qt. If rice is your primary use, the standard 6-qt is more forgiving.

What’s the best rice to cook in an Instant Pot? Basmati and long-grain white. These varieties are the most forgiving of the Instant Pot’s cooking method. Japanese short-grain and sushi rice are the worst performers, stick with a dedicated cooker for those.
