How to Use a Rice Cooker Reheat Function (Leftovers vs Keep Warm)
The Reheat key is not Keep Warm and not a second Cook cycle. Listing-check what your panel actually prints, then reheat fridge leftovers once — not rice that sat on the counter.
This desk does not run a product test fleet. What follows is manufacturer menu language, leftover food-safety guidance, and owner-consensus research — not a stopwatch from a lab kitchen.
This page is the Reheat key. What the panel prints, when to use it, and how it differs from Keep Warm. How to reheat rice without getting food poisoning is the storage-and-toxin page (fridge window, microwave, stovetop). Keep-warm safety is the holding-temperature page. Do not treat those as twins. Delay-start for raw rice in water is a third job: how the timer works.
Three buttons, three jobs
| What you press | What it is for | Skip it when… |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Warm | Rice that just finished cooking and is still hot | You already refrigerated the pot, or the cooker sat unplugged |
| Reheat | Cold leftover rice that was stored safely | The rice sat on the counter for hours; toxins will not cook off |
| Cook / White | Raw rice and water | You dumped yesterday’s fridge rice in and expected a gentle steam |
A leftover FAQ on this site used to treat “run a regular cycle” as the whole reheat story. That is the one-button workaround, not the Micom Reheat key. Listing-check the panel.
Cuckoo America’s CR-0675F (ASIN B08WFNV82W) menu list names Reheat next to Keep Warm and Preset Timer. Zojirushi’s NL-EAC page lists automatic keep warm, extended keep warm, and reheat. The NS-TSC10 family does the same. A BLACK+DECKER RC516 or Aroma ARC-753SG is Cook → Warm only. There is no Reheat key to hunt.
Food safety first (then the button)
Bacillus cereus spores survive cooking. The danger is cooked rice that cools into the 40–140°F band and sits there. Reheating to steaming will kill vegetative bacteria. It will not destroy heat-stable toxin that already formed on the counter. That is why the NHS leftover-rice note and the USDA danger-zone page both start with how the rice was stored, not which appliance you use.
Rules this desk will repeat:
- Cool leftovers quickly. Fridge within about two hours (sooner if the kitchen is hot).
- Eat refrigerated rice within a few days. Freeze extra portions.
- Reheat once, until piping hot throughout — food-safety language is about 165°F / 74°C, not “warm to the touch.”
- Throw out rice that sat out overnight, even if you plan to “just hit Reheat.”
The longer toxin explainer: rice and food safety. Keep Warm as a hold, not leftover storage: keep-warm safety.
How to use Reheat on a Micom cooker
Manufacturer manuals for Zojirushi Micom and Cuckoo Micom describe the same shape of cycle: a short steam, not a new soak-boil-steam White program.
- Scoop fridge rice into the inner pot. Do not pack it into a brick.
- Sprinkle water — about 1 tablespoon per cooked cup is the usual owner-consensus splash. Too little and the top stays cold. Too much and you get porridge.
- Close the lid. Confirm the inner lid and gasket are seated. A leaky lid is a gasket SKU, not a Reheat setting.
- Select Reheat, not White, not GABA, not Scorched Rice.
- When it beeps, fluff. Eat. Do not park the same leftovers on Keep Warm for another eight hours.
Cuckoo copy on the CR-0675F calls Reheat “optimal for leftovers.” That is marketing for this key. It is not permission to skip the fridge.
Zojirushi’s extended Keep Warm is still a hold for rice that never left the hot pot. Do not use Extended Keep Warm as a substitute for refrigeration, then Reheat the next day from a warm cooker that sat in the danger zone after you unplugged it.
One-button pots (no Reheat key)
BLACK+DECKER RC506 (frozen title — do not retitle), the RC516, and the ARC-753SG trip from Cook to Warm when the water is gone. There is no leftover program.
Workaround owners actually write down:
- Splash of water on cold rice.
- Lid on. Press Cook.
- When steam is obvious and the rice is hot in the center, unplug. Do not wait for the thermal switch to think the pot is a new batch of raw rice.
Microwave is still the faster weekday move. That walkthrough lives on how to reheat rice safely. Use this page when the cooker is the tool you have.
Skip-buy / skip-cycle
Skip Reheat if the rice sat out. The button cannot un-make toxin.
Skip a full White cycle on leftovers if you have a Reheat key. You will toast the bottom and then need scorched-pot cleanup. If you wanted a toasted sheet, that is nurungji or okoge — a different dinner.
Skip buying a new cooker just to get Reheat. A microwave plus a fridge already covers leftovers. Buy Reheat as a side-effect of a Micom you wanted for White, GABA, or jasmine — NL-EAC10 and CR-0675F both list it — not as the whole reason to spend $140.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the rice cooker Reheat button the same as Keep Warm?
No. Keep Warm holds already-hot rice above the USDA danger zone after a cook. Reheat is a short steam cycle for rice that has cooled. If the panel only says Cook and Warm, you do not have a Reheat key.
Can I reheat leftover rice in a rice cooker?
Yes, if the rice was cooled and refrigerated within about two hours. Add a splash of water, use Reheat if you have it, or a brief Cook cycle on a one-button pot. This is not a fix for rice that sat at room temperature. Storage rules live on How to Reheat Rice Without Getting Food Poisoning.
Should I use Reheat or start a full White cycle on leftovers?
Use Reheat when the cooker has that key. A full White or Cook cycle on cold leftover rice can dry the bottom and glue a new crust. One-button pots have no Reheat key — splash of water, lid on, Cook until steaming, then unplug.
How many times can I reheat rice?
Once. NHS and USDA-style leftover rules treat a second reheat as another trip through the danger zone. Freeze extra portions instead of cycling the same bowl through Reheat all week.
Does Cuckoo or Zojirushi include Reheat?
Many Micom US models do. Cuckoo America's CR-0675F menu list includes Reheat. Zojirushi's NL-EAC and NS-TSC families list Reheat next to automatic and extended Keep Warm. Confirm the live listing and the stamp on the cooker.
